  17. <p>    How did Midori get to Carnegie Hall? By fiddling around --
  18. in fact, by practicing up to seven hours a day. On Oct. 25 the
  19. diminutive violinist from Osaka will celebrate her 18th
  20. birthday by making her debut at Carnegie. "It's going to be
  21. exciting," she says, "because I've spent so much time there, but
  22. on the other side of the stage." Now a Manhattan high school
  23. senior, Midori (who has dropped her surname Goto) browses in
  24. record shops like any other teenager. One new album soon to be
  25. in the racks: her dazzling version of the finger-fracturing
  26. Paganini caprices.
